I have an American Standard single lever kitchen faucet that sometimes leaks around the base after it is shut off.
Would replacing the cartridge fix this or is it something else?

    90% chance that replacing the cartridge will fix this. Not many other places in there for leaks to develop.

    try taking handle and spout off and greasing spout orings, vasoline or gear lube will work, unless you can find some "heat proof grease" or stem grease

    try the packing nut if it has one
